chimney house

Two side extension pods to this single storey elongated bungalow resolve the short comings of a south facing rear elevation and two storey neighbouring development. The extrusion emulates the form of a chimney and mirrors the existing period roof pitch to bring high level light into the depths of the interior through a 10m long feature skylight.
The existing rear skillion awning roof was removed. The remaining rear and side elevation walls beyond the front three bedrooms were completely removed to open through to the new side and rear extensions.
Substantial steel beams painted black replace the original rear and side walls to open up an expansive column free space, while signifying a robust memory of the cottage’s history.
The new extension consists of a simple contemporary linear roof form and dramatic 10m long skylight orientated to maximise access to daylighting and overcome the constraints of being located in close proximity to a new two storey dwelling on the north eastern boundary.
The front three bedrooms and hallway within the original period cottage remain intact while conserving the entirety of the original cottage roof. The new extended rear contains a family bathroom, laundry, kitchen, dining and living area opening out to the rear yard.
A second side extension adjoins the master bedroom at the front and contains an ensuite and walk-in-robe.
The space has a sense of calm, being connected to the outdoors both visually and physically.
This is an amazing achievement for an owner-builder. Installing a 10m long steel beam is without doubt the most ambitous of lockdown projects we've seen.
While preserving the original period cottage, the house is transformed from a dark and enclosed interior to a modern open space, washed with incident light and visually connected to the outdoors. Without needlessly increasing the footprint, the expansiveness of the kitchen/dining/living space is much greater than the sum of its parts.
The interior is animated throughout the day by the interplay of shadows and reflections against the dining room wall.
The contemporary side extension form is connected to the original house by an articulated lower link roof that morphs into a steep skillion, differentiating clearly between old and new while maintaining and enhancing the original cottage form.
A skylight and an interior window creates a light-filled uplifting bathroom space.
