Croydon Pavillion

A beautifully crafted family pavilion extending from a classic Californian Style bungalow.
The project reflects the proportions and flow of the original cottage. It reaches to the sky, embraces the newly landscaped gardens and frames a secret courtyard housing a single Japanese Maple casting shadows across the transition zone between new and old.

Illume House

A cherished Federation cottage is reimagined with a contemporary rear addition that respects its heritage character while introducing light, space and flexibility for modern family life. Behind the preserved roofline and period façade, the interiors unfold in a calm, breezy, Scandinavian-inspired palette — soft neutrals, warm timbers and abundant natural light create a quiet, elegant atmosphere.

Careful design and sensitivity went into marrying the heritage context with the scale of contemporary rear additions, guided by the principles of the Burra Charter in approaching period buildings with respect. One of the key challenges was successfully gaining approval for a height variation in this Heritage Conservation Area, where the 6-metre limit was exceeded by 1.15 metres (19%). The additional height was carefully justified and designed to reduce visual bulk, maintain solar access, and reinforce the pitched roof character of the locality.

The result is a home that balances historic charm with refined, modern living: timeless on the outside, serene and uplifting within.

Aperture

Aperture House works within and re-envisions the original footprint of this Queens Park cottage, shaping new organisations of spaces and creating a more porous, luminous interior. Working within a conservation area, the challenge was to balance the need to retain the existing dwelling whilst also maximising the floor area which could be designed and built into habitable space. Another consideration was the need to illuminate what was formerly a dark and damp home, and help residents overtime reduce and minimise energy usage.

The project sought to collapse the division between the inside and outside, creating a generous living space which can encompass both with wide sliding doors. Storage and utilities are smartly tucked into the walls and furniture, helping the inside feel uncluttered and efficient. Skylights and openings brighten the spaces, which alongside simple white walls and timber surfaces makes this home warm and inviting for residents and guests alike.

Aperture House

A single-storey split level rear extension to a semi-detached bungalow on a narrow site invites you in to meander down through its gentle level changes. The extension is on the southern side of the shared party wall making access to daylight a challenge. This was overcome by the introduction of dramatic north facing clerestory glazing in the new kitchen and rumpus opening up to the back garden.

Award Winning Apex House

Two side extension pods to this single storey elongated bungalow resolve the short comings of a south facing rear elevation and two storey neighbouring development. The extrusion emulates the form of a chimney and mirrors the existing period roof pitch to bring high level light into the depths of the interior through a 10m long feature skylight. A skylight and an interior window creates a light-filled uplifting bathroom space. The interior is animated throughout the day by the interplay of shadows and reflections against the dining room wall. The space has a sense of calm, being connected to the outdoors both visually and physically.

Award Winning Chimney House

This family-held single storey terrace in a heritage conservation area was bought in 2019 in an original and unrenovated, disheveled state as an investment property for short term Airbnb rental. The client's brief was for the project to be 'instagrammable', while working to a limited budget and accelerated timeframe.  

Working within the constraints of complying development approval controls helped to fast track the construction and circumnavigate the Council approval process. This meant working within the existing footprint of the building while maintaining the three bedrooms, moving the bathroom and creating indoor-outdoor dining and entertaining opportunities. The appearance of space was increased by opening up viewlines through to the rear yard, all the way from the front door, while dissolving the walls to the living areas and kitchen. 

Due to the travel restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the brief evolved from being an Airbnb rental to potentially a student rental, and ultimately due to a stronger property market, the owner instead decided get  the property ready to sell. This metamorphosis, however, sowed the seed for a need for workspaces to be incorporated into each of the bedrooms, ahead of its time in providing for working from home requirements.

Located in a densely populated heritage conservation area, the heart and soul of a remodelled split level workers cottage is a new double-height void, dramatically top-lit by large skylights. Generous volumes replace original cellular rooms and dog legged circulation within a compact footprint, overlaid with a rich heritage tapestry.

Award Winning Intersect House

"Cutting-edge terraces with city and bridge views"

The site of an unrenovated single storey full width blonde brick cottage was bought as an investment property and subdivided into two lots to create two new terraced houses with four bedrooms and rooftop study. Set within a context of both one and two storey houses and situated on an east-west orientated block, the challenge was to maximise the development potential of the lots while mitigating any neighbouring impacts. The result is a compact three level terrace that feels generous and luxurious while making the best use of its volume to create a spacious light-filled interior.

The dedicated work in turning plans into reality finally paid off after a long approval process and success through the court.

Expansion for growing family

This north facing rear addition has been designed as two side-by-side pavilions, one private containing the master bedroom suite, bathroom and laundry; the other public,  containing the open plan living/kitchen opening onto a covered rear deck. Large areas of glazing are protected from summer sun, yet devised to harness the thermal benefits of the winter sun, while re orientating the living space towards the garden.

Yin and Yang House

New life breathed into dilapidated Victorian terrace.

This Victorian terraced house was in a very ‘original’ and somewhat dilapidated condition. The intrusive single storey rear addition was replaced with a new full width two storey addition containing open plan living spaces and kitchen addressing a rear covered entertaining deck and garden. The clients envisaged creating a sense of openness and uninterrupted views through to the rear garden from the entry sequence. Their vision also encapsulated the existing brick of the adjoining boundary wall, appreciating its industrial, raw texture in contrast to the smooth, natural tones of plywood wall cladding. The simple material expression informs the rear elevation which works hard to conceal its inner workings to achieve a simple elegant form.
