PandA Announcement: Paul officially joins the PandA Team!

After 8 years of building great foundations and a growing network of collaborators, we are very excited to announce that Paul (ie. the to-date silent 'P' in PandA) has now officially joined Amanda to help manage projects in all aspects across design and delivery. Welcome ‘P’!

Coming full circle after meeting as architecture students in 1999 (Kent Institute of Art and Design, Canterbury, UK), and having since worked at polar opposite ends of the architectural spectrum, P&A are now excited to share the wealth of their combined experience and knowledge with a broad range of current and future projects and clients.

Houzz® & Google 5 Star Review - Karl

Amanda is an exceptional architect. We interviewed several architects for our renovation and Amanda was the clear stand out. She understands how to optimise for space, is masterful at maximising natural light and goes above and beyond throughout the entire design process. The first time we met Amanda she immediately picked up on site specific challenges and opportunities that other architects missed. For instance, Amanda was able to immediately rule out a complying development approach based on eyeballing the width of our block, possible through her deep knowledge of council and planning regulations. Prior to engaging Amanda she built us a cardboard model of her proposed design, carried out previous DA searches on the property to identify information that could assist in the development application process and provided transparent information on pricing. Amanda kept us informed on a near real-time basis throughout the design process via Slack, with dedicated channels for different aspects of the project. She assisted with the building tender process, and helped us visualise the eventual design with phenomenal 3D renders. During the build Amanda made herself available to assist with any enquiries and was very generous with her time. Amanda cares about the end result, is a masterful designer and we are very grateful to have had her on our team!

Another PandA project in the making!

So thrilled to see this dramatic skylight installed on site and beautiful timber sliding doors. The sense of height and volume, as always, exceeded our expectations and overcomes the feeling of being in the shadow of the new two storey house next door.

Approval from City of Sydney to (respectfully) push the envelope

Delighted for my clients who have been waiting patiently for the determination of this application that exceeds the current height control by 20%, similar to a large proportion of earlier development within the Heritage Conservation Area.

Many thanks to everyone involved who supported this outcome including our Planning Consultant and one supporting submission: “The proposed plans achieve an excellent design and should be supported”.

What is Passive House?

Having completed the Passive House Designer Course over the past few weeks I have learnt that there is a better way to build. We already create environmentally responsive houses that harness natural sources of heating and ventilation but we need to be active users of those passively designed homes, and the internal environment is somewhat beholden to the extremes of our climate.

Passive House is different, it is a complete solution that brings together a number of principles to efficiently and cost effectively improve our building envelopes. It is a tested and verified certificate system that has been developed in Germany. In a nutshell, the indoor environment is controlled to specifically achieve a narrow window of comfortable temperatures, humidity levels and heat flow. It is this control of the variation that eliminates the potential for mould and condensation to develop in the first place, while still allowing indoor outdoor living, as we have become accustomed to (albeit when our outdoor air quality is good).

The benefits are five fold. Aside from improved health, air quality, acoustics and comfort, sustainable homes can be achieved economically. Theoretically a room could be heated by as as little as 10 tealights, the initial extra over investment in construction can be as little as the cost of a coffee per day, and balances out rising energy running costs in the longer term compared to a conventional house.

The choice is: throwing money to the wind on energy that is going through the roof, or investing those savings up front and living in a comfortable and healthy property for years to come.

With 90% of Passive House projects spent in the planning phase, time is very much on our side to plan ahead for better times.

Approved in less than 4 weeks in Leichhardt!

Early concept model for a new ground floor rear extension designed to harness as much northern sun as possible, overcoming the site constraints of a north boundary party wall while shading from the western sun and improving neighbouring privacy with expansive sky views to the south.

Cutting-edge terrace with city and bridge views

Congratulations to my client on the sale of one of these terraces! The dedicated work in turning plans into reality has finally paid off after a long approval process and success through the court:

Cutting-edge terrace with city and bridge views

A striking new addition to the streetscape, this architect-designed terrace is spread over three levels with a sequence of uplifting space that are both beautiful and functional. Interiors capture the essence of contemporary luxury with an emphasis on durable, timeless materials while a landscaped garden and rooftop terrace are perfect for entertaining. On a dual access block on one of Leichhardt's best streets, the Torrens-titled home is just two blocks to Norton Street and a short walk to schools and parks.

Houzz® 5 Star Review - Henarise Pty Ltd

I can highly recommend Amanda from PandA Studio's. As the builder on one of her residential projects last year (5 month build) she delivered a design that exceeded the clients expectations, an architectural rebuild of a 3 bed bungalow in Drummoyne that brought much needed light and layouts to make the house both practical and uplifting to live in. Communication of details and architectural intentions were very easy to the client and myself which led to an excellent build on time and budget.

Houzz® 5 Star Review - Richard Evans (Private Certifier)

As a building surveyor, it is always a pleasure dealing with other professionals who truly understand the onerous requirements of the legislative framework applicable to any building project.
I have worked with Amanda for a number of years now and Amanda has always been committed to assisting us in our roles to get compliance on her designs/ projects. Her efforts have always translated into a recognisable value proposition for all stakeholders on the job - particularly the homeowners/underlying clients.
